about the art
What happens when a graphic designer turns off the computer and picks up a brush?
My paintings come from doodles and dreams. (They have been compared to Joan Miro, Georgia O'Keefe, and Dr. Seuss.) Some have simple meanings, others are explorations of colours, shapes and symbols. My paintings do not hold the secrets of the universe - merely some of it's energy and flow. I ask each canvas what it wants to be, and try to allow that energy to come to fruition. It might be inspired by a thought, a song, or a colour I came across repeatedly that day. Painting while remaining mindful of the dream state allows me to be free to accept "mistakes", create my own meanings for patterns, and let the paint flow where it likes. I might hover over a piece for hours, tilting and adding and moving the colour as it dries. I might not.
I love doing pieces for friends who come to me with requests like "I'm having trouble sleeping, can you paint something to bring me good dreams?" I love stalking a room and deciding what sort of energy it needs to bring balance. (No matter how this sounds however, let me assure you that I wear far too much black to be a hippie.)
These are cheery, reasonably priced paintings that anyone can use to perk up their living or working environment. Commissioned pieces are available. The paintings shown here are small digital photos that can't do justice to the colours and delicate blending. Please use your imagination.
In the seven years I've been concentrating on my painting, I've sold over 100 pieces. I find it interesting that owners of my work are such an incredibly diverse lot:
neuroscientist, bass player, DJ, life coach, poet, software developer, journalist, systems administrator, photographer, real estate broker, medical student, wildlife rehabilitator, ESL teacher, library technician, internet order coordinator, web designer, canoe builder, information security professional, fashion designer, magazine assistant editor, and commercial airplane pilot.
